P.C. Arthur Selby, also known as Constable Selby in Postman Pat: The Movie, is a policeman who lives in Greendale. He is also the father of Lucy Selby and the grandson of Great-Grandpa Selby.

Biography

A foreigner in valley terms, he comes from London and has lived in Greendale for only ten years. He is well liked and knows when to (reasonably) turn a blind eye. His daughter is Lucy Selby.

In the fourth series, he earned a police car dubbed the Panda Car, which has now become his main transportation in the series ever since. Before this he had a bicycle which has rarely been used since the third series.

Personality

As a policeman, P.C. Selby is very law abiding citizen; health and safety is his number one concern, although he does over exaggerate on some of his cases. He also has a crush on Doctor Gilbertson. He speaks with a Cockney accent.

Job

P.C. Arthur Selby works as a police constable serving Greendale.

Attire

He is mostly shown wearing a 1970s-1980s police uniform and a bobby helmet. He is sometimes shown without his custodian helmet on some occasions, mostly because he cannot fit into his panda car wearing it.

Trivia

  • P.C. Selby is one of the few characters with moustaches without a visible mouth on his models, the others being Ted Glen, Alf Thompson and Major Forbes. In the Cosgrove Hall and Mackinnon and Saunders eras of the series, whenever Arthur had to speak, the animators would have to brush the hair of his moustache up and down.
  • Throughout series 3 onwards, he seems to have a crush on Dr. Gilbertson.
  • According to Ivor Wood's short character biography of P.C. Selby, he is said to come from East Yorkshire. However, he does not speak a Yorkshire accent in the TV series, as he speaks with a Cockney accent, which is an accent typically heard in London (especially East London).
