Greendale

Greendale is the home of Pat Clifton and the main setting of the Postman Pat series.

Characteristics[]

Greendale is a large, busy village located at the heart of the Cumbrian countryside. Running through the centre of the village is High Street, where Greendale Post Office is situated. At the edge of the village is the train station, home to The Greendale Rocket, and where Nisha Bains and Sara Clifton run a cafe there while Nisha's husband Ajay Bains runs a regular schedule on The Greendale Rocket to the nearby town of Pencaster.

Greendale Crag is located near the village.

Greendale is also known for its windy and narrow roads in the valley which can make Pat's rounds more difficult when they get blocked or full of impassable snow drifts.

Inspiration[]

Greendale was inspired by the real life valley of Longsleddale, near Kendal in Southern Cumbria.

Trivia[]

Some of the hills, mountains, trees, fences, fields and rocks appeared in two "Gran" episodes "Gran the Camper" and "Gran's Rare Bird".
The cream telephone from "Bertha" would later be reused in many houses from Postman Pat takes the Bus onwards. Additionally, the black telephone would later appear in the "Gran" episode "Gran's Good News" and the "Bertha" episode "More Speed, Less Work".
Some of the rubbish bins were originally from Litterbug's house in "Charlie Chalk".
When Cosgrove Hall animated the series, various doors from the normal-scale house models, including the ones that were used by Woodland Animations, would be swapped around and placed on other house models.
Roughly about 14 normal-scale houses (5 in the Woodland Animations era, made by Brian Driver and 9 in Cosgrove Hall and Mackinnon and Saunders eras, made by The As and When Men) and 20 half-scale houses were made for the series.
Some models of the Greendale houses, some of the sheds by some of the houses and the model aerial set of Greendale are now owned by the Cosgrove Hall Films Archive at the Waterside Arts Centre. According to Rosy Whittemore, a member of the Waterside Art Centre, she estimated that they own around 11 full-scale houses and around 20 half-scale houses. She added that they prioritised rescuing every single house/model they could find in the units so she thought that they have the majority of them unless there were any hidden away.^[1]
